SaVE Communities Mathare Clean-Up Exercise
August 30

The Mathare Clean-Up Exercise is an operational framework designed by SaVE Communities and local stakeholders to address deep-seated sanitation, public health, and environmental challenges within the Mathare informal settlement in Nairobi, Kenya. Due to high population density and systemic infrastructure gaps, unauthorized waste dumps lines transit pathways and critical water sources like the Mathare River.

Central to the initiative’s long-term methodology is transforming passive waste disposal habits into an active ecosystem of community ownership, neighborhood accountability, and deep environmental sensitization. The project systematically engages local residents, grassroots youth groups, and academic networks, educating them on the biochemical impacts of open dumping on soil beds and the adjacent Mathare River basin. Volunteers are trained to extend standard household hygiene practices into common transit pathways, public steps, and shared water collection points. This strategic behavioral shift helps dismantle the normalization of open-air dumping, prevents the immediate re-accumulation of solid refuse at cleared locations, and ensures that the structural public health benefits of a clean environment remain permanent.

To sustain this environmental momentum, the initiative leverages STEM integration to transform solid waste management into a viable platform for localized youth micro-enterprises. By teaching young volunteers how to efficiently sort refuse at the source, compost organic matter, and route high-density plastics directly to Nairobi’s green recycling hubs, the project converts physical refuse into tangible economic commodities. This self-sustaining business model bridges the gap between grassroots communal volunteerism and structural municipal sanitation, offering marginalized youth a regular income source while actively healing their local ecosystem. Ultimately, the systematic combination of scientific awareness, economic incentive, and community-led execution serves as an adaptable blueprint for comprehensive ecological rehabilitation across other informal urban settlements.
