RIght Here, Right Now Global Climate Summit

June 5, 2025

The Right Here, Right Now Global Climate Summit is a high-impact global initiative that brings together diverse voices from around the world to address the climate crisis through the lens of human rights. Anchored in the principle that climate change is not only an environmental issue but a profound human rights challenge, the summit unites policymakers, academics, youth, activists, Indigenous leaders, and other stakeholders in shared dialogue and solution-building. The summit emphasises that climate change exacerbates existing inequalities and disproportionately affects the most vulnerable communities, especially in the Global South. Recognising that urgent action is needed, the summit creates a platform to advance justice-centred approaches to climate solutions, rooted in science, inclusivity, and equity.

Speaking During the summit, H.E. Dr. Joyce G. N. Kithure introduced the SaVE Communities Project (Science Adding Value to the Environment and the Community), an initiative she leads as Kenya’s Second Lady. The project brings together STEM knowledge and skills to address urgent societal and environmental challenges through science-based, locally relevant, and sustainable solutions.

She focused on climate change adaptation, highlighting the serious threats climate change poses to Kenya. With agriculture largely rain-fed and ecosystems under pressure, communities face increasing risks from droughts, floods, soil degradation, and food insecurity.

To tackle these challenges, the SaVE Communities Project is implementing key initiatives, including:

  • Renewable energy and biogas production to convert organic waste into clean cooking fuel and reduce deforestation and greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Waste-to-resource and circular economy solutions to transform plastic and industrial waste into valuable materials.
  • Soil health and biochar innovation to improve soil fertility, retain water, capture carbon, and strengthen food security.
  • Development of biodegradable plastics and bio-based fertilizers to reduce pollution and promote sustainable agriculture.
  • Climate education and outreach programs to empower communities with scientific knowledge.
  • Greenhouse gas monitoring to track carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide levels and evaluate environmental impact.
  • Impact measurement and scaling of successful projects, including composting and biogas systems.

She concluded by calling for collective climate action, emphasizing that when science and communities collaborate, meaningful and lasting change is possible for a greener, healthier, and more resilient Kenya.
